The Tjalk was originally built as a sailing tjalk in 1896. A tjalk is a flat-bottomed sailing ship, When used for sailing it was fitted with retractable side boards on port and star board. The tjalks were widely used until the 1960s for transportation in Holland's and Friesland's shallow coastal and inland waters. Nowadays a large number of these sturdy and stable ships are still in use for recrea tional purposes and as houseboats because of their stability resulting from the flat bottom. The moter barge, has recently been completely overhauled and refitted so that presently it is in a state as new or better than new as a multi-purpose vessel and as a most comfortable floating home. The side boards are now superfluous as the ship is not under sail anymore and because the powerful engine and the large rudder will keep the ship well on course even in windy weather. The present owner sailed the ship to the South of France through the canals of Holland, Belgium and France. Its flat bottom and its length of 18 metres are ideal for cruising and turning in the platanes shaded canals of France, but the ship could as well be used along the coasts of Southern France and the nearby Spanish Costas as it is fully equipped for sea travel. The shipo is now mainly used on the picturesque Canal du Midi running between the ports of Sete and Narbonne on the Mediterranean, and Bordeaux on the Atlantic, where it has a permanently reserved mooring place with 220 Volts and fresh water connections near Narbonne in the Aude Department of Languedoc - Roussillon, also called 'Le Midi'.
Comfort
The barge is divided in a fore and aft section, each with its own wet cells: a toilet with washing basin between the saloon and the fore sleeping cabin; and aft, next to the second sleeping cabin with a double bed, there is a shower cabin with connections for a washing machine in an adjoining closet. Both fore and aft parts of the ship have cabins with double beds. More sleeping space can be made available by using the spacious saloon and/or deck tents (not part of the scope of supply). The fore and aft part of the interior are accessible through the steering hut, thusly offering privacy for the inhabitants of either section, which each have their own top deck also. In the middle, just before the steering cabin, a modern open kitchen with all facilities is handy situated for serving the fore and aft parts of the ship. The steering hut is well equipped and comfortable in all kinds of weather. The whole ship is winter proof and ideally ventilated for the summer days. Apart from the skipper's high-chair, the top (steering) cabin has space for two extra chairs and a table. The carpenters, who clad the whole interior with teak wood, have done an excellent job in creating ample and easily accessible storage space in all nooks and corners, while creating a warm and luxurious living environment. The low position of the saloon versus the surface allows for ideal privacy as passers-by can hardly look into the interior while the inhabitants standing up have an outward view all around. The epoxy painted decks and cabins allow for parties with lots of visiters atending:
Apart from the ship as specified above, the scope of supply includes: Navigation Lights, Battery Charger, Water Pump, Water Pressure Equalizer, Water Boiler, Gas Bun, Fire Extinguisher, Compass, Depth Meter, Electric Anchor Winch, Bilge Pump, TV + Satellite Antenna, Four Ring Stove, Oven, Refrigerator, Freezer, Washing Machine, Bathroom Fixtures, Shower Drainage Pump, Deckchairs and Benches, Parasol, Mooring items. The Mathea is sold as a self-supporting holiday home (gîte) for six persons, i.e. including furniture, household fixtures, cooking utensils, plates, cutlery, glasses, bedlinen and towels.
